While H.E.A.T is preparing for their big H.E.A.T.stock
event, they’ve been doing lots of other projects throughout the year with much
success.
One such project was Hit the Floor Running, a charitable run
where participants are encouraged to shed their clothes and run across campus to
benefit multiple charities. The $15 fee to join the run went to benefit a fund
to install a tile floor for a school in Malawi, Africa, while the clothes that
were ditched at the beginning went to orphanages in San Marcos and Haiti.
President of the H.E.A.T organization, sophomore Daniel
Domenech, said that students were really pumped and excited to strip for a
cause. “The fact that they’re helping two really great causes is just a bonus.”
Emily Hom-Nici, co-director of the Environment Committee of
H.E.A.T., also mentioned their recent “Clean your Butts” program, in which
their goal was to reduce the unsightly cigarette butts that litter the ground
and bring attention to the problem that littering can cause to the environment.
While these bigger projects take time and planning, smaller
projects are also used to raise funds for the group. Things like selling
decorated pots with seeds in them give the group money to fund future projects,
like adopting a spot through Keep San Marcos Beautiful.
